From The Students

“I was nervous to take this course because I do not know much about hip hop. I enjoy some songs, but I for the most part misunderstood the motives and nuances of the music, which for the most part, rendered hip hop unenjoyable for me. I am now leaving this class with a deeper understanding of hip hop's nuances and its artists, old and new, and I am happy that I took this class. Professor Joseph is amazing. She is helpful, understanding, and always willing to meet and talk about any concerns you have. The course was extremely well organized and easy to follow. The readings supplemented lecture and helped to understand the historical context of hip hop. It did flow like a history class, which helped me understand how hip hop music is a primary source and comes out of the time it is written. I am so happy I took this course and I plan to take more courses with Dr. Joseph in the future.”

“I really enjoyed the AFAM 110 course due to the passion of Dr. J. In every class, you can clearly see her hard work and efforts put into it. She knows her topics like the back of her hand and it is so refreshing to see her happily teaching to us. I never left the class feeling bored or ever wanted to leave the class early. I always looked forward to the class every Tuesday and Thursday. If I was not graduating I would of happily taken another course :).“

“Dr. Joseph is the best professor on this campus. She has a knack for teaching and it shows. Not once have I ever seen or heard a student say they were bored in class. She keeps the class engaged and always gives us opportunities to earn points and showcase what she has taught us. What i like most about Dr. Joseph is that she will not move on until she knows that each person in the class understands what she is instructing us on. I also like that when we have the more difficult research papers, she will literally take time out her class to either explain the requirements and how to use the resources needed herself or if she cannot she will take us/bring someone in who can explain it to us.”

“Dr. J makes her students woke as fuck! Enough said.”
